Farm Bill Update June 07, 2012
The US Senate has voted to move forward with the farm bill debate. The cloture motion passed with an overwhelming vote of 90 to eight, well above the 60 votes necessary. The process now moves to debate and amendments—a process that could take two to three weeks. More than 80 amendments have been submitted. Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson has introduced an amendment which would allow the USDA fruit and vegetable program to included dried, canned and frozen fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh. A variety of amendments would reduce the subsidies for crop insurance.
