Farm Bill Starts June 14, 2012
The US Senate adjourned for the week Thursday without announcing an agreement on the amendment process. Majority Leader Harry Reid says the farm bill debate may resume next week, if an agreement can be negotiated. Agriculture Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow is planning to present a consent agreement for completing the farm bill early next week. In her words, it is “very possible” to pass the farm bill without a difficult cloture vote. Stabenow is putting an optimistic spin on the process, emphasizing this is “a must-pass bill.”
North Dakota Senator Kent Conrad has introduced an amendment that includes a target price program. If included in the final bill, it would match up with the House bill that includes target prices. Conrad has been joined by fellow North Dakota Senator John Hoeven, Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss and Montana Senator Max Baucus in sponsoring this bill. The target price proposal is considered an add-on to the shallow-loss provision in the Senate bill.
