USDA forecasts US dry edible bean production at 27.0 million cwt, up 36 percent, or 7.2 million cwt, from last year. Harvested area is 45 percent above the previous year.
North Dakota dry bean production is up 86 percent from last year, despite an average yield estimated at only 13.5 bags per acre. Minnesota’s dry bean crop is up 22 percent, with an average yield of 18 bags.
USDA also estimated planted acres by class, showing an 85 percent boost in pinto beans this year; navies are up 28.5 percent, and black bean acres are up 18 percent. In North Dakota, growers planted 98 percent more pinto beans than last year.
