Good food, fellowship and fun on tap at Pre Bean Day banquet

The annual pre Bean Day banquet is set for Jan. 23 at the Fargo, N.D., Holiday Inn. You must call the Northarvest Bean Growers Association office at (218) 334-6351 by Jan. 21 to reserve banquet tickets. Tickets are $15 per person, payable at the door.

The event starts at 5 p.m. Commercial exhibits and a cash bar will be open. The banquet follows at 7 p.m. The menu includes steak and chicken oscar, baked potato, green bean almondine, and "beany burger soup" -- a recipe Northarvest Bean Growers Association promotes for use by the foodservice industry.

Holly Henson, a Minnesota comedienne known for her sassy satire, will entertain after the banquet.

Henson has appeared on TV shows such as MTV and Comedy Central. She is the ex-host of KSTCs "The Big Bad Movie." She can be heard on KQRSs "Tom Barnard" show and KS95s "Van and Cheryl in the Morning" shows in the Twin Cities. She has also appeared on other radio stations, including 93X and WCCO.

In 2002, she was a winner in the Twin Cities annual comedy contest, "Laff Off."

"Holly Henson is ruthlessly funny!...Can make you laugh so hard your fillings ache," says the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

"Holly Henson left both the men and women in the audience hoarse and breathless with laughter," says the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Come prepared to help direct future research

The Northarvest Bean Growers Association will help North Dakota State University researchers conduct an annual survey of dry bean production problems and practices at Bean Day.

NDSU and University of Minnesota research teams and the Northarvest board of directors use the survey to help determine research priorities, says Carl Bradley, NDSU extension plant pathologist, who is in charge of the survey this year.

Here are some of the things you will be asked in the written survey:

  • Number of dry bean acres you planted in 2002.
  • The acres of each variety planted.
  • The seed source.
  • Worst production problem encountered in 2002.
  • Crop rotations used.
  • Worst disease.
  • Worst weed.
  • Pesticides applied and number of acres treated.
