Growers re-elect three
Gary Paur, Gilby, N.D.; Gary Friskop, Wahpeton, N.D.; and Mark Streed, Milan, Minn., were re-elected to the Northarvest Bean Growers Association board of directors at Bean Day. Paur represents District 2;  Friskop, District 5; and Streed, District 8.

Beans: antioxidant food?
Bean are loaded with antioxident compounds. Antioxidants destroy free radicals, which are highly active chemicals whose excess has been linked to heart disease, cancer and aging.
In recent tests, USDA scientists found that that the level of flavonoids  a plant pigment linked to antioxidants  was 10 times higher in black beans than in oranges and was about the same level as in grapes, apples and cranberries.
Of all the types of beans, black beans have the highest level of antioxidant activity followed by followed by red, brown, yellow and white beans, in that order.

Here are dates that the National Agriculture Statistics Service will be releasing crop information on dry beans in 2004
" March 31  Prospective plantings based on March 1 survey.
" June 30  Planted acres based on June 1 survey.
" Aug 12  Production forecast by stage.
" Oct. 12  Production forecast.
" Dec 10  Production estimate by class and state.
Each week during the growing season, the NASS office in each state issues crop progress and weather reports.
