Roundup approved for preharvest use.
August 12, 2004
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has labeled Roundup for preharvest and spot-treatments of weeds in dry beans. The product is NOT to be used as a desiccant.
According to the label, Roundup must be applied at the "hard dough" stage of the legume seed (30% grain moisture or less). Also, it is not recommended for use on dry beans grown for seed, as a reduction in germination or vigor may occur.
Spraying green immature beans can cause high residues. In 2002, green Vista navy beans sprayed with Roundup UltraMax had a glyphosate residue level of 20 parts per million. The Food and Drug Administration has set 5 parts per million as the tolerance level.
