NDSU Plant Science Student Honored at Bean Meeting
November 14, 2017
North Dakota State University (NDSU) master's student Katelynn Walter received a Student Recognition Award at the biennial meeting of the Bean Improvement Cooperative in East Lansing, Michigan. Her poster, titled "Pre-Germination Flooding Tolerance in a Middle-American Diversity Panel of Dry Bean," was named Outstanding Poster Presentation.
In the study, Walter performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS), in which a significant chromosomal region was associated with germination rates under pre-germination flooding stress. From there, identification of pre-germination flooding tolerant and sensitive dry bean genotypes were determined. A native of Dickinson, North Dakota, Walter studies at NDSU under dry edible bean breeder Juan Osorno.
