Another Potential Palmer Amaranth Case
October 15, 2018

Another potential case of Palmer amaranth is being investigated in eastern North Dakota. Tom Peters, an Extension agronomist with the University of Minnesota and North Dakota State University, says a tissue sample of the plant has been submitted to the University of Illinois for DNA analysis. “What makes this case a little different is these were big plants. In some of the other locations in North Dakota, we saw small Palmer plants that weren’t making seed.” As a weed control specialist, Peters goes only to say not only do the plants have to be removed, but fields will have to be monitored for seed beds. There is evidence this potential outbreak is due to contaminated feed or seed.
