Breeding Dry Beans for the Northern Plains, 2000 -- A new greenhouse that the Northarvest Bean Growers Association helped build came on line. It approximately doubled the space available for the dry bean breeding program. Scientists made approximately 700 unique hybridizations involving nine market classes and exotic seed types. They also continued to screen lines for disease resistance, conducted yield trials at seven locations in Minnesota and North Dakota, planted breeding nurseries and used an off- season nursery in Puerto Rico to speed variety development.
Calcium in White Mold Management of Dry Bean 2000 -- Calcium applied alone and with fungicide helped reduce white mold levels and increase yields in some trials. However, in one experiment applying calcium alone had no significant effect on white mold levels.
Spartan and Reflex Use in Dry Bean -- In these trials, Reflex and Spartan herbicides gave excellent broadleaf weed control with adequate dry bean safety. They also were effective on ALS resistant weeds.
